Post Graduate Work Permit

Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

One of the most significant advantages of studying in Canada is the opportunity to apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) upon completing a post-graduate program at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI). This program allows international students to gain valuable work experience in Canada, making it a key factor in the decision to study in the country.

Benefits of PGWP

The PGWP is valid for a duration of 8 months to 3 years, depending on the length of your completed program. The immigration officer will determine the validity period based on the supporting documents you provide.

A PGWP allows you to work full-time or part-time for any employer in Canada, giving you the chance to gain crucial Canadian work experience. This experience can be beneficial if you decide to pursue permanent residency in Canada later on. Additionally, the PGWP provides you with temporary legal status to be employed in Canada.

Applying for a PGWP

Eligibility: To be eligible for a PGWP, you must successfully complete your course of study at a DLI.

Application Timeline: You must submit your application within 180 days of receiving your official transcripts from your DLI confirming course completion. The 180-day window starts from the date you receive official notification of program completion or the release date of your final marks, whichever comes first.

Application Location: You can apply for your PGWP from inside or outside Canada.

Important Considerations

It is essential to note that your PGWP cannot be extended beyond its validity period. However, while your PGWP is valid, you may apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) if your permanent residency application is in process. Alternatively, if you plan to stay in Canada beyond your PGWP, you can change your status to that of a visitor.
