Benefits of Express Entry

Choosing the Express Entry system offers several key advantages:

  • Fast Processing Times: Applications submitted through Express Entry are typically processed within six months, allowing you to start your new life in Canada sooner.

  • Permanent Residency: Successful applicants receive permanent residency, granting you the right to live and work anywhere in Canada.

  • Family Inclusion: You can include your spouse and dependent children in your application, allowing your entire family to benefit from permanent residency.

  • Access to Government Services: As a permanent resident, you’ll have access to healthcare, education, and other essential services.

  • Pathway to Citizenship: After meeting residency requirements, you may apply for Canadian citizenship, enjoying all the rights and privileges that come with it.

  • Enhanced Job Opportunities: As a permanent resident, you can work for any employer in Canada, opening up more job opportunities and career paths.

Who Can Apply Through the Express Entry System?

To apply through Express Entry, you must belong to at least one of the following federal program categories:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSW Program): This is the main program for skilled workers. Eligibility requires at least one year of continuous full-time work experience in the last ten years in a skilled occupation (NOC skill levels 0, A, or B). You also need proficiency in English or French, an educational qualification of secondary school or higher, and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report.

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This program is tailored for international students and foreign workers currently in Canada. You must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years and meet language proficiency and education requirements.

  • Federal Skilled Trades Class (FST Program): This program is for applicants with qualifications in skilled trades. You need at least two years of paid, full-time work experience in a skilled trade (NOC skill type B) within the last five years, along with a valid job offer for at least one year or a certificate of qualification in your trade from Canada.

Eligibility Factors for Express Entry

Eligibility is determined by five main factors:

  1. Language Skills

  2. Type and Level of Work Experience (Canadian and Foreign work experience)

  3. Amount of Work Experience

  4. Valid Job Offer from a Canadian employer

  5. Educational Qualifications

Additional factors may include:

Age: How likely you are to settle in Canada.

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Points

Once you create your profile in the candidate pool, the system evaluates and assigns points based on the eligibility factors. These points contribute to your CRS score. Improving your language proficiency or work experience can increase your score, enhancing your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

Express Entry Draws

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regularly conducts draws, releasing a cut-off score based on the current applicant pool. Candidates above this score receive an ITA to apply for permanent residency.

Processing Time

The average processing time for Express Entry applications is about six months to a year, depending on the number of applications and processing capacity.

Costs Involved

Before submitting your Express Entry profile, you may incur the following costs:

  • Language exam fees (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, etc.)

  • ECA report fees

  • Document translation (if necessary)

  • Fees for legal representation

  • Government fees post-ITA, including:
    • Medical exam
    • Police background check
    • Biometrics fee
    • Main application processing fee + Right of Permanent Residence fee
    • Fees for including a spouse or partner (same as above)
    • Fees for dependent children

Express Entry vs. Provincial Nomination Program (PNP)

The PNP is an additional pathway under the Express Entry system. Provinces can nominate candidates based on their economic needs and preferences. If you receive a PNP nomination, you gain an additional 600 points, significantly increasing your chances of receiving an ITA.

Applying through the PNP allows you to target a specific province and can enhance your chances of selection. Once you receive your Canadian PR status, the benefits and rights are the same, regardless of whether you applied through Express Entry or a PNP.
